Our theme is “The Yellow Tails” in recognition of the 93rd BG’s role in the 20th Combat Bombardment Wing. The 20th Wing Headquarters was based at Hardwick along with the 93rd. With that in mind, we are planning to invite anyone associated with the other Yellow Tail groups; the 446th, 448th and 489th to attend. We will develop the theme through presentations and speakers to explore how important the wing was in providing overall guidance and coordination for joint missions. The graphic below was developed by the Heritage League depicting the tail markings for each wing. The 489th converted to yellow tails when they flew with the 20th.

446th Bomb Group - Known as "the Bungay Buckaroos" after the name of their Suffolk base, the 446th flew B-24 Liberators on strategic, support and interdictory missions. The Group led the Eighth Air Force on the first heavy bomber mission on D-Day, 6 June 1944, and continued to support the ground forces move eastwards, dropping airborne troops into Wesel, north-west Germany, as part of the advance across the Rhine.
448th Bomb Group - Stationed at Seething in Norfolk, from Dec 1943 to Jul 1945, the 448th B-24 Liberators were part of the Allied bombing campaign against the Axis countries. Their first mission was Gacabruck, Germany. The 448th flew 262 missions through to 25 April 1945. The Group lost 101 aircraft in action flying 6,774 sorties.
489th Bomb Group - Stationed at Halesworth between the months of April and November 1944, the 489th flew 106 operational missions. The base at Halesworth was the closest airfield to the English Channel, being only eight miles from the coast. The Group’s first combat mission was on 30 May 1944, just prior to D-Day. The 489th were assigned to the 20th from 14 Aug until 29 Nov 1944. Twenty-six aircraft were lost.
